Indian AI Cancer Care Platform Highlighted in BRICS Health Journal

An Indian-developed artificial intelligence platform, iOncology.ai, is gaining international attention after being featured in a special issue of the BRICS Health Journal. This recognition coincides with the BRICS Summit held from September 12-13, where the platform's potential to transform cancer care was spotlighted.

The brainchild of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune, iOncology.ai is supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The platform aims to streamline cancer care through the integration of clinical data, facilitating early detection, risk assessment, and comprehensive treatment planning.

Transforming Cancer Care in Emerging Economies

The review titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation” was authored by Ashok Sharma and colleagues from AIIMS and C-DAC. It explores how AI can enhance cancer screening and diagnosis, particularly in resource-limited settings. The platform is currently in its pilot phase, undergoing clinical validation to gauge its performance in real-world scenarios.

Dr. Ashok Sharma highlighted the opportunity for India to showcase how domestically developed solutions like iOncology.ai can address disparities in cancer care across the Global South. He emphasized the importance of BRICS collaboration in strengthening cancer prevention and treatment through evidence-based, interoperable solutions.

Addressing Global Cancer Challenges

BRICS countries, home to over 40% of the global population, face significant cancer challenges, with approximately 9 million new cases and 4.66 million deaths annually. The review underscores the disparities in cancer patterns and access to care, positioning iOncology.ai as a pivotal tool within India's expanding digital health infrastructure.

The platform utilizes curated datasets from Indian clinical, radiological, and histopathological sources, with plans to include genetic data and integrate with electronic health record systems. However, iOncology.ai is still in the research phase, with no peer-reviewed studies yet confirming its diagnostic accuracy or clinical utility.

Future Validation and Implementation

Prospective multicenter validation is necessary before iOncology.ai can be implemented widely in clinical settings. The ongoing evaluation aims to establish the platform's effectiveness in improving cancer care, particularly in emerging economies where access to specialized treatment is limited.

This development is part of a broader effort to enhance India's cancer-control capabilities, integrating AI-driven solutions into national health initiatives like the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission.
