Indian AI Cancer Care Platform Gains Recognition in BRICS Journal

iOncology.ai, an Indian AI platform for cancer care, is highlighted in BRICS Health Journal, showcasing its potential in transforming cancer treatment in emerging economies.
The Indian artificial intelligence platform iOncology.ai, developed to enhance cancer care, has been prominently featured in the BRICS Health Journal. This recognition comes as part of the BRICS Summit held from September 12-13, where dignitaries inaugurated a special issue highlighting the platform's potential impact on cancer treatment.
Collaboration and Development
iOncology.ai is a collaborative effort between the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune. The project is backed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The platform aims to integrate clinical data for early cancer detection, risk assessment, treatment planning, and patient data management.
The review article titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation,” authored by Dr. Ashok Sharma and his team from AIIMS and C-DAC, explores the role of artificial intelligence in improving cancer screening and diagnosis. The article emphasizes how AI solutions like iOncology.ai can bridge disparities in cancer care across developing nations.
Clinical Validation and Future Prospects
Currently undergoing pilot-stage clinical validation, iOncology.ai is being rigorously evaluated to determine its performance and potential application in clinical settings. Dr. Sharma highlighted the importance of demonstrating how homegrown innovations can address cancer care challenges, particularly in resource-limited environments.
The platform is designed to support clinicians by offering evidence-based, interoperable solutions tailored to the needs of emerging economies. It utilizes curated Indian clinical datasets and plans to incorporate genetic data for enhanced diagnostic capabilities. However, the platform has not yet been clinically validated, and further multicentre trials are necessary before it can be widely adopted.
Addressing Global Cancer Challenges
The BRICS countries, which represent over 40% of the global population, face significant cancer-related challenges, with approximately 9 million new cases and 4.66 million deaths annually. The review highlights the disparities in cancer patterns and access to care within these economies.
iOncology.ai is positioned within India's broader cancer-control initiatives, including population screening and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. The platform's integration with electronic health record systems is expected to enhance cancer surveillance and tertiary care capabilities.
