India Offers Rs 10 Crore Subsidy for Medical Device Manufacturing

India's government invites proposals to boost domestic medical device production, offering subsidies up to Rs 10 crore.
In a strategic push to enhance India's medical device manufacturing capabilities, the government has announced the opening of applications for subsidies under the Scheme for Strengthening of Medical Device Industry (SMDI). According to a statement from the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers, the initiative aims to reduce the nation's dependency on imports, foster innovation, and strengthen the value chains within the medical devices sector.
Subsidy Schemes to Boost Domestic Production
The government is inviting proposals under two specific sub-schemes. The first, the Marginal Investment Scheme for Reducing Import Dependence, offers a one-time capital subsidy of up to Rs 10 crore. This financial support is on a reimbursement basis and is intended for the manufacturing of critical components, raw materials, finished devices, or accessories. The goal is to significantly lower the reliance on imported materials and equipment.
The second sub-scheme, the Medical Device Clinical Studies Support Scheme (MDCSS), provides financial assistance up to Rs 5 crore. This subsidy will also be on a reimbursement basis and is designated for conducting clinical investigations, clinical performance evaluations, post-market follow-up studies, and animal studies. The government aims to promote thorough research and development within the domestic market through this initiative.
Application Process and Eligibility
Entities interested in benefiting from these schemes must submit their proposals online by July 23, 2026, at 6:00 PM. Detailed guidelines, including eligibility criteria and application procedures, are available on the Department of Pharmaceuticals website. The official portal for submissions is smdi.lsssdc.in, where applicants can find all necessary information to proceed with their application.
This move is part of a broader strategy by the Indian government to bolster the medical devices sector, ensuring that the country not only meets its domestic needs but also positions itself as a competitive player in the global market. By offering substantial financial incentives, the government aims to encourage local manufacturers to innovate and invest in advanced technologies.
Implications for the Industry
The introduction of these subsidies is expected to have a significant impact on the medical devices industry in India. By reducing the dependency on imports, the country can achieve greater self-reliance in essential healthcare products. Moreover, the focus on clinical studies and research will likely lead to the development of innovative solutions tailored to local needs, potentially opening new markets both domestically and internationally.
Experts believe that these initiatives will not only enhance the quality and availability of medical devices in India but also create opportunities for employment and skill development within the sector. As the industry grows, it is anticipated that there will be increased collaboration between government bodies, academic institutions, and private enterprises, fostering an environment conducive to sustained growth and innovation.
