Healthcare Global Enterprises (HCG) is at the forefront of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) with patient data to personalize cancer treatment, according to founder and non-executive chairman BS Ajaikumar. Speaking at the Global Healthcare Academy's AI Conclave in Bengaluru, Ajaikumar outlined HCG's innovative approach to using AI to improve clinical outcomes for cancer patients.
AI and Data-Driven Treatment Customization
HCG is utilizing AI to analyze clinical, genomic, and proteomic data, classifying patients into distinct treatment categories based on their responses to various therapies. This approach aims to assist clinicians in making informed treatment decisions tailored to individual patient needs. Ajaikumar emphasized the importance of understanding patient responses to treatments, stating, "By creating these buckets, when the next patient walks in, we can choose the right treatment."
The initiative is supported by HCG's expansive patient database, which serves as a foundation for developing AI models that identify patterns in treatment responses, thereby advancing precision oncology. Currently, the company's research is particularly focused on head and neck cancers as well as gastrointestinal (GI) cancers, leveraging its growing laboratory capabilities.
Strategic Partnerships and Expanding AI Capabilities
In 2024, HCG partnered with Accenture to enhance its AI-driven cancer research capabilities. This collaboration involves deploying image analysis software and informatics platforms to scrutinize cancer patient data and molecular alterations, with the goal of refining diagnosis, treatment planning, and overall patient care. The partnership is a key component of HCG's broader AI strategy.
HCG's push towards AI integration follows a major ownership change in February 2025, when private equity firm KKR acquired a 54% stake in the company, gaining control of the oncology hospital chain. Despite the shift, Ajaikumar continues to guide the company as its non-executive chairman.
Global AI Conclave Highlights
The two-day AI Conclave hosted by the Global Healthcare Academy brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including clinicians, AI scientists, hospital leaders, and technology experts. The event focused on the adoption of AI in healthcare, emphasizing patient safety, ethics, and clinical oversight. Companies such as Google, Philips, and IBM participated, highlighting India's potential to develop cost-effective, scalable AI-powered healthcare solutions.
Ajaikumar, who also serves as the executive chairman of the Global Healthcare Academy, remarked on AI's transformative potential in healthcare, noting that its true value lies in strengthening clinical decision-making and patient care.
