Early Vision: A Seed Planted in 1977
In 1977, driven by an innate urge to serve the neglected and marginalized sections of society, Dr. Rao began his mission in the most humble way possible — with just five children and one teacher in a garage attached to his clinic. While maintaining a busy pediatric practice, he chose to focus on children with intellectual disabilities at a time when awareness, infrastructure, and social acceptance were minimal.
That small beginning grew into what is today known asÂ
Sweekaar Academy of Rehabilitation Sciences (SARS) — a model multi-specialty rehabilitation institution recognized nationally and internationally.

Over the 48 years, Sweekaar has rendered services toÂ
over 97 lakh (9.7 million) individuals with disabilities, coming from all over the country and abroad thus
impacting 97 lakhs families many from below-poverty-line backgrounds who could not afford care.
It is a model in the country, cost effective, quick service delivery,one stop service center. Dr. Rao recognized early that India’s biggest challenge in rehabilitation was not just access to services —
but lack of trained professionals. To bridge this gap, he established multiple training institutes under Sweekaar Â
Academy of Rehabilitation Sciences  Training Programes were extended to four campuses in the old state of Andhra Pradesh and could create a sea change in the field by

29 training programs, including Diploma, Degree, PG, Post-PG, Psy.D, and Ph.D courses serving across India and globally.
This contribution alone makes Sweekaar one of the
most significant human resource development initiatives in rehabilitation in the country.
