Cyberattack Forces Boston Scientific to Revise 2026 Financial Projections

Boston Scientific faces setbacks in 2026 sales and profits due to a major cybersecurity breach.
Boston Scientific has announced a significant revision of its 2026 financial projections following a cybersecurity breach that disrupted its global operations. The medical device company revealed in a regulatory filing that unauthorized activity on its IT systems, first detected on August 25, led to a network outage affecting manufacturing and the processing and shipment of customer orders.
Impact on Financial Forecasts
As a result of the cyberattack, Boston Scientific no longer expects to meet its previously issued third-quarter and full-year 2026 sales and adjusted profit forecasts. Prior to the incident, the company had projected 2026 adjusted earnings of $3.28 to $3.32 per share and a sales growth of 5.5% to 6.5%. For the third quarter alone, adjusted earnings were expected to range between 80 cents and 82 cents per share.
Analysts, such as Stifel's Rick Wise, have noted that investors are now viewing 2026 as a "lost year" for the company, shifting their focus to Boston Scientific's prospects in 2027. Shares of the company fell by 2.3% in morning trading following the announcement.
Operational Recovery and Future Outlook
Boston Scientific is actively working to restore its operations, with major distribution centers reportedly processing and shipping orders at or above normal levels. The company stated that sterilization facilities are operational and manufacturing has resumed across most global sites. Despite these efforts, the full financial impact of the cyberattack remains uncertain, although the company hopes to recover some of the affected revenue as it addresses backlogs.
The cyberattack is part of a broader trend affecting the healthcare sector, with other companies such as Abbott Laboratories, Stryker, Medtronic, and Novo Nordisk having faced similar challenges recently. J.P. Morgan analyst Robbie Marcus commented that the incident has obscured visibility into Boston Scientific's underlying business trends, delaying investor assessments of growth and competitive dynamics in key areas like electrophysiology and the heart device Watchman.
Company's Response and Future Plans
In an update, Boston Scientific confirmed that the effects of the cyberattack were limited to select internal infrastructure, and product quality analyses indicated no impairment beyond disruptions to new activations of its cardiac device remote-monitoring platform. The company plans to provide an updated financial outlook when it reports its third-quarter results on October 28.
The incident underscores the growing cybersecurity threats facing the healthcare industry, highlighting the need for robust security measures to protect sensitive data and maintain operational integrity.
