CDC Reports Surge in Foodborne Parasite, 86 Hospitalized Across U.S.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced a significant increase in cases of cyclosporiasis, a foodborne illness that has affected nearly 3,000 individuals across 31 states. As of the latest update, 86 people have been hospitalized due to the infection, which is characterized by severe gastrointestinal symptoms.
Unprecedented Surge in Cases
The current outbreak marks a stark rise compared to the previous year, with Michigan experiencing a particularly intense wave. The state has reported 1,562 cases, with 36 hospitalizations, primarily in its southeastern region. Ohio, which shares a border with the affected area in Michigan, has also noted a significant number of cases, reporting 177 infections and 28 hospitalizations as of early July.
Other states impacted include Colorado, Illinois, New York, North Carolina, Texas, and Wisconsin. Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, Michigan's chief medical executive, highlighted the unusual nature of this surge, noting that the state typically records only 40 to 50 cases annually.
Challenges in Identifying the Source
The CDC is actively investigating the origins of the outbreaks but has yet to determine if they are linked. The cyclospora parasite is predominantly found on fresh produce, which complicates tracing efforts. Dr. Dianna Blau, acting chief of the CDC’s Parasitic Disease Branch, explained the difficulty in pinpointing the source due to the delayed onset of symptoms, which can appear a week or more after consumption.
Historically, outbreaks have been connected to items such as raspberries, bagged salads, and herbs like cilantro and basil. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is working with state partners to manage the situation, but no product recalls have been issued thus far.
Symptoms and Treatment
Cyclosporiasis is caused by the cyclospora parasite and leads to symptoms such as explosive, watery diarrhea, severe fatigue, body aches, and stomach cramps. While most cases result in loss of appetite and nausea, fever is uncommon. The illness is treatable with specific antibiotics, but identifying and managing the source of contamination remains a priority for health officials.
As investigations continue, public health agencies are urging individuals to practice safe food handling and hygiene to minimize the risk of infection. The CDC's ongoing efforts aim to prevent further spread and identify any common sources of contamination.
