On Saturday, Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda released a pivotal report at the 9th edition of India Medical Device 2026, held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. The report, titled 'AI in MedTech: Revolutionising Healthcare Through Artificial Intelligence', was jointly developed by Praxis Global Alliance and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI). It underscores five primary priorities for the responsible adoption of AI in India's healthcare sector.
AI-Enabled Diagnostics to Lead the Way
The report identifies AI-enabled diagnostics as a critical area for large-scale implementation. Such technologies are poised to extend specialist medical expertise beyond major urban centers, thereby improving healthcare accessibility and efficiency. The potential to bridge gaps in healthcare delivery is significant, especially in primary and secondary healthcare settings.
However, the transition from successful pilot projects to widespread clinical use requires addressing several challenges. These include the fragmentation of health data, the need for more robust evidence, and the development of adaptive AI lifecycle regulations. Additionally, establishing supportive procurement and reimbursement frameworks is crucial for advancing AI adoption.
Building on Existing Foundations
India's groundwork for AI integration in MedTech is already in place, thanks to initiatives like the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, IndiaAI Mission, SAHI, BODH, and the National Medical Devices Policy, 2023. Despite these efforts, the report highlights ongoing challenges such as evolving regulations, fragmented data systems, and limited reimbursement pathways that need coordinated efforts from various stakeholders, including government bodies, healthcare providers, and academic institutions.
India's Potential as a Global Leader
The report suggests that India has a unique opportunity to leverage its strengths in software development, digital infrastructure, and clinical diversity. Combined with a growing MedTech manufacturing base, these factors position India as a potential global leader in the responsible development and deployment of AI-enabled medical technologies.
