The review titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation,” authored by Ashok Sharma and colleagues from AIIMS and C-DAC, emphasizes how artificial intelligence can bolster cancer screening, early diagnosis, and access to specialized care.

Dr. Ashok Sharma, speaking to the Times of India, highlighted the potential of iOncology.ai to bridge cancer-care disparities across the Global South. He stressed the importance of BRICS collaboration in advancing cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment through evidence-based solutions tailored for emerging economies. The platform's objectives include empowering clinicians and enabling more equitable cancer care, especially in resource-limited settings.

Challenges and Future Prospects

Although iOncology.ai is still in the pilot stage of clinical validation, with performance and potential use being evaluated, the platform's developers are optimistic about its future impact. Currently, there is no peer-reviewed evidence confirming its diagnostic accuracy or clinical utility. Multicenter validation is necessary before it can be widely adopted in clinical settings.

The review highlights the significance of addressing cancer-care disparities, noting that BRICS countries account for over 40% of the world's population, with approximately 9 million new cancer cases and 4.66 million deaths annually. It underscores the wide disparities in cancer patterns and access to necessary healthcare services across these nations.

Positioned within India's expanding digital health infrastructure, iOncology.ai is part of a broader effort that includes population screening, cancer surveillance, and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. The platform utilizes curated clinical, radiological, and histopathological datasets from India, with future plans to incorporate genetic data and integrate with electronic health-record systems.
