Max Healthcare's Abhay Soi argues against a room rate cap, citing investment needs.

Abhay Soi, Chairman of Max Healthcare, has voiced his reservations about a proposed blanket cap on private hospital room rates, suggesting that such a measure could undermine the viability of new hospital investments. Speaking during Max Healthcare's earnings call, Soi emphasized the need to balance affordability with the necessity for expanding hospital infrastructure.

Balancing Affordability and Expansion Needs

The recommendation to cap room rates comes from the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare, which suggests that room charges in private hospitals should not exceed those of three-star hotels in nearby areas. Soi, however, argues that this approach might not consider the critical need for new hospital beds and the financial viability required to attract investment into the healthcare sector.

"The committee focuses on affordability, but investment viability is equally important," Soi noted. "Once both factors are considered, I believe wiser decisions will prevail," he added, expressing confidence that the Ministry would account for these concerns.

Max Healthcare's Position on Expansion and Efficiency

Despite the potential for price caps, Soi assured that Max Healthcare is not reconsidering its expansion plans. He highlighted the company's efficiency in healthcare delivery, suggesting that any future policy could present opportunities for consolidation. "We provide superior returns on healthcare investments, making us well-positioned for any changes," Soi stated.

Soi further stressed that policies should cater to the average rather than outlier cases, positioning Max Healthcare as an efficiency leader in the sector.

Hospital Admission Protocols and Insurance Guidelines

Addressing recent guidelines from the General Insurance Council intended to reduce unnecessary hospitalizations, Soi clarified that hospital admission decisions should remain between doctors and insurance companies. "Hospitals provide logistical support, but the decision to admit a patient lies with the doctor," he explained.

Soi's comments come amid concerns from the Association of Healthcare Providers (India), which has cautioned against using the guidelines to deny cashless insurance claims. The association represents over 21,000 hospitals and views the guidelines as advisory rather than mandatory.

As debates continue over healthcare affordability and insurance protocols, Soi's remarks highlight the complexities involved in balancing cost control with the need for robust healthcare infrastructure.
