Abhay Soi Criticizes Proposed Price Cap on Private Hospital Rooms

Abhay Soi, Chairman of Max Healthcare, has voiced concerns over a proposed price cap on private hospital room rates, a recommendation from the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare. During Max Healthcare's earnings call, Soi emphasized that affordability must be balanced with the necessity for new hospital beds and investment viability.
Parliamentary Panel's Recommendation
The parliamentary committee suggested that private hospital room charges in major metropolitan areas should not exceed the average rates of nearby three-star hotels. This recommendation aims to address the affordability and accessibility of healthcare services in both public and private sectors.
Soi remarked, "The recent committee report speaks about affordability, but one needs to look at another important aspect, which is the need for new hospital beds and viability. Both need to go hand in hand." He urged that any policy should create an environment conducive to hospital investments, ensuring the sector remains viable for expansion.
Max Healthcare's Expansion Plans
Despite the proposed price caps, Soi assured that Max Healthcare's expansion plans remain unaffected. He stated, "We are efficient providers of healthcare. If there is going to be any sort of risk-free returns available or if there’s any viable proposition for anyone to set up hospitals, we believe we will have superior returns relative to that." He suggested that such a scenario might present opportunities for consolidation within the sector.
Soi emphasized the importance of creating policies that cater to the average needs rather than outliers, highlighting Max Healthcare's efficiency in the industry.
Hospital Admission Guidelines Controversy
On the topic of hospital admission guidelines, Soi commented on the General Insurance Council’s new clinical guidelines aimed at reducing unnecessary hospitalizations and insurance claims. The guidelines propose standards for when patients should be admitted for cashless insurance coverage.
Soi clarified that admission decisions are made by doctors, not hospitals, and should be a matter between clinicians and insurers. "If the doctor says admit the patient, we admit the patient. If they say admission is not required, we cannot admit the patient," he explained. He noted that hospitals provide logistics and services, while doctors make clinical decisions.
The Association of Healthcare Providers (India) has responded to the guidelines, expressing concern that they might be used to deny cashless approvals or reject claims. Soi's comments indicate a need for clarity and cooperation between insurers and healthcare providers to ensure fair practices.
