Abhay Soi Criticizes Proposed Price Cap on Private Hospital Rooms

Abhay Soi, Chairman of Max Healthcare, has expressed concerns over a proposed price cap on private hospital room rents, arguing it could hinder investment in new hospital beds. During an earnings call, Soi commented on the Parliamentary panel's recommendation to limit room charges in private hospitals to the average rates of three-star hotels nearby. He emphasized the importance of balancing affordability with the need for expansion and development in the healthcare sector.

Concerns Over Investment Viability

Soi highlighted the necessity of creating a conducive environment for investment in healthcare infrastructure. "We believe the sector will require a lot more capital," he stated, adding that the setup should be viable to attract investments. He noted that the healthcare industry needs to balance affordability with the capacity to expand and improve services. Despite the proposed price caps, Max Healthcare has no plans to alter its expansion strategies. "If there’s any viable proposition for setting up hospitals, we believe we will have superior returns," Soi remarked, indicating potential opportunities for consolidation.

Debate Over Hospital Admission Guidelines

In addition to the pricing issue, Soi addressed the General Insurance Council's new guidelines on hospital admissions, which aim to reduce unnecessary hospitalizations. He stressed that hospital admissions should be the purview of doctors and insurers, not hospitals. "A hospital does not admit a patient, a doctor does," Soi explained, noting that hospitals merely provide logistical support. The guidelines suggest when patients with common illnesses should be admitted and eligible for cashless insurance claims. However, the Association of Healthcare Providers (India) has warned against insurers using these guidelines to deny claims.

Soi's comments come as the healthcare sector grapples with balancing accessibility and affordability while ensuring that investment in infrastructure continues. The debate underscores the complexities involved in healthcare policy-making, especially in a country with a growing demand for medical services.
