Abhay Soi Criticizes Proposed Price Cap for Private Hospitals

In a recent earnings call, Abhay Soi, Chairman of Max Healthcare, expressed skepticism about a Parliamentary panel's recommendation to cap room rents in private hospitals. The suggestion aims to control healthcare costs by aligning room charges with those of three-star hotels in nearby areas.
Concerns Over Investment and Expansion
Soi highlighted the potential impact of such a policy on the expansion and investment in the healthcare sector. "The sector requires substantial capital, and the environment must be conducive for investments," he stated. Soi emphasized the need to balance affordability with the necessity for new hospital beds, suggesting that decision-makers might reconsider the proposal upon evaluating these factors.
Despite the potential regulatory changes, Soi reassured stakeholders that Max Healthcare's expansion plans remain unchanged. He noted that the company aims to provide efficient healthcare services and sees potential consolidation opportunities if the price cap is implemented.
Hospital Admission Protocols
Addressing the General Insurance Council's new guidelines on hospital admissions, Soi asserted that decisions should rest between doctors and insurers. The guidelines intend to minimize "unnecessary hospitalizations" and manage rising insurance claims. Soi clarified, "A hospital does not admit a patient; a doctor does. We provide the logistics, infrastructure, and services based on medical advice." He added that any standardization should involve the Indian Medical Association's agreement.
The Association of Healthcare Providers (India), representing over 21,000 hospitals, has indicated that the guidelines should serve as recommendations rather than mandates, cautioning against insurers using them to deny claims.
