Max Healthcare's Abhay Soi argues against a price cap on hospital rooms, citing investment needs.

Amid discussions about a proposed price cap on private hospital room rents, Abhay Soi, Chairman of Max Healthcare, has voiced concerns over its potential impact on healthcare investment. Speaking during the Max Healthcare earnings call, Soi emphasized the need to balance affordability with the expansion of hospital infrastructure.

Concerns Over Investment Viability

Soi highlighted that while the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare aims to improve healthcare affordability, the proposal could deter necessary investments in new hospital facilities. The committee recommends that room charges in private hospitals should not exceed the rates of three-star hotels in the vicinity. However, Soi argued that this approach might limit the sector's growth potential.

"The recent committee report speaks about affordability, but one needs to look at another important aspect, which is the need for new hospital beds and viability. Both need to go hand in hand," Soi stated. He expressed confidence that a balanced approach will prevail, noting, "Wise minds will think otherwise."

Max Healthcare's Expansion Plans Unaffected

Despite the proposed price caps, Soi confirmed that Max Healthcare is not reconsidering its expansion plans. He assured stakeholders that the company remains committed to delivering quality healthcare and sees potential opportunities for consolidation if the price cap comes into effect. "We believe we will have superior returns relative to any risk-free propositions," he said, pointing out that Max Healthcare operates as an efficient provider in the industry.

Hospital Admissions and Insurance Guidelines

Addressing the General Insurance Council's new guidelines on hospital admissions, Soi clarified that decisions regarding patient admissions should rest between doctors and insurance providers, not hospitals. The guidelines aim to reduce unnecessary hospitalizations and insurance claims by advising on when patients should be admitted.

"A hospital does not admit a patient, a doctor admits a patient," Soi explained. He emphasized that hospitals provide logistics and services, but the decision to admit a patient is ultimately made by the doctors, aligning with insurance agreements. The Association of Healthcare Providers (India) has also stated that the guidelines should serve as recommendations rather than mandates.
