Max Healthcare's Abhay Soi argues against a blanket price cap on private hospital room rents, citing investment needs.

Abhay Soi, Chairman of Max Healthcare, has voiced concerns over a parliamentary proposal to cap the room tariffs at private hospitals. The suggestion, part of a report by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare, aims to align hospital room charges with the average tariffs of three-star hotels nearby. However, Soi cautioned that such a cap could hinder the development of new hospital infrastructure.

Balancing Affordability and Investment

During a recent earnings call for Max Healthcare, Soi emphasized the need to balance affordability with the necessity for additional hospital beds. He stated, “The sector requires significant capital investment, and the environment must be conducive to such investments.” He argued that policymakers should consider both affordability and the viability of new investments in healthcare infrastructure.

Soi reassured stakeholders that Max Healthcare has no plans to alter its expansion strategy despite the proposed caps. He suggested that if the industry becomes more consolidated due to these changes, Max Healthcare could potentially benefit.

Hospital Admission Guidelines Under Scrutiny

Soi also addressed new clinical guidelines issued by the General Insurance Council (GIC) aimed at reducing unnecessary hospital admissions. He clarified that decisions to admit patients should rest with doctors and insurers, not hospitals. “A hospital provides logistics and services, but the admission decision is a clinical one made by doctors,” he explained.

His comments follow a statement from the Association of Healthcare Providers (India), which represents over 21,000 hospitals, cautioning against insurers using the guidelines to deny cashless insurance approvals. The association stressed that the guidelines should serve as a reference, not a strict rule.

Soi emphasized that any standardization of admission protocols should involve the Indian Medical Association (IMA) to ensure clinical decisions remain the responsibility of healthcare professionals.

Outlook on Healthcare Policy

The ongoing debate highlights the complexity of implementing healthcare policies that are both fair and conducive to growth. Soi remains optimistic that the Ministry of Health will take a balanced approach, considering both the affordability for patients and the financial viability for hospitals.

With the healthcare sector poised for expansion, Soi’s comments underscore the need for policies that support growth without compromising patient care or financial stability. As discussions continue, the industry watches closely to see how these recommendations will impact the future of healthcare investment and operations in India.
