Max Healthcare's Abhay Soi argues against a blanket price cap on hospital rooms, citing investment viability.

In a recent earnings call, Abhay Soi, Chairman of Max Healthcare, voiced strong concerns over a proposed cap on private hospital room rates. The cap, recommended by a Parliamentary panel, suggests aligning hospital room charges in major cities with the average rates of three-star hotels in the vicinity. This proposal is part of a broader initiative by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare to improve healthcare affordability and accessibility.

Balancing Affordability and Investment

Soi emphasized the need to balance affordability with the financial viability required for expanding hospital infrastructure. He noted that while affordability is crucial, it should not come at the expense of future investments in healthcare facilities. "Wise minds will think otherwise," Soi remarked, suggesting that policymakers should consider the necessity of new hospital beds alongside cost considerations.

He further argued that the healthcare sector demands significant capital investment and that creating a conducive environment for such investments is essential. "We believe the sector will require a lot more capital," Soi stated. He expressed confidence that Max Healthcare would continue to offer superior returns, viewing the situation as a potential opportunity for market consolidation.

Response to Insurance Guidelines

Soi also addressed recent guidelines from the General Insurance Council (GIC) concerning hospital admissions. The guidelines aim to reduce unnecessary hospitalizations and manage health insurance claims more effectively. Soi clarified that decisions regarding patient admissions should remain between doctors and insurance companies, not hospitals.

He explained that hospitals provide infrastructure and services, but the decision to admit a patient lies with the attending physician. "If the doctor says admit the patient, we admit the patient," Soi stated, adding that any standardization of admission criteria should involve agreement with the Indian Medical Association (IMA).

The Association of Healthcare Providers (India) (AHPI), which represents over 21,000 hospitals, has cautioned against using these guidelines to deny cashless insurance claims, emphasizing their advisory nature.
