Max Healthcare's Abhay Soi argues against a blanket cap on room rates, citing investment needs.

During a recent earnings call, Abhay Soi, Chairman of Max Healthcare, expressed concerns over a Parliamentary panel's recommendation to cap private hospital room charges. The panel suggested aligning these charges with the average rates of three-star hotels in nearby areas. Soi argued that such a cap could negatively impact the creation of new hospital beds and the overall investment climate in the healthcare sector.

Balancing Affordability and Investment

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare released a report emphasizing the need for affordable healthcare. However, Soi emphasized the importance of balancing this need with the viability of new investments in the sector. He stated, "Wise minds will think otherwise" once they consider the need for more hospital beds alongside affordability.

Soi pointed out that the healthcare sector requires substantial capital investments to expand and improve infrastructure. He warned that a price cap without considering investment viability could stifle the growth of hospital facilities.

Max Healthcare's Expansion Strategy

Despite the proposed regulatory changes, Soi assured that Max Healthcare's expansion plans remain unchanged. He highlighted the organization's efficiency and ability to provide superior returns, which could become advantageous if the market consolidates under the new regulations. He noted, "If there is any viable proposition for anyone to set up hospitals, we believe we will have superior returns relative to that."

Soi further remarked that policies should cater to the average needs rather than outliers, emphasizing Max Healthcare's position as an efficient provider.

Hospital Admission Protocols and Insurance Guidelines

Addressing the General Insurance Council's new clinical guidelines, Soi clarified that decisions on hospital admissions should lie between doctors and insurance companies, not hospitals. The guidelines aim to reduce "unnecessary hospitalisation" and manage rising health insurance claims.

Soi explained, "A hospital does not admit a patient; a doctor admits a patient." He stressed that the role of hospitals is to provide logistics and services, while the decision to admit a patient should rest solely with clinicians. He suggested that any standardization should involve agreement from the Indian Medical Association (IMA).

His comments followed the Association of Healthcare Providers (India)'s stance that the advisory should remain a guideline, cautioning against its use to deny insurance claims.
