Abhay Soi of Max Healthcare critiques a proposed cap on private hospital room rents, citing investment viability concerns.

Abhay Soi, Chairman of Max Healthcare, has voiced concerns over a Parliamentary panel's proposal to cap room rents in private hospitals. Speaking during a Max Healthcare earnings call, Soi argued that such a cap could undermine the financial viability of building new hospital facilities. He emphasized the need to balance affordability with the necessity for investment in healthcare infrastructure.

Room Rent Cap Under Scrutiny

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare suggested that private hospital room charges in major cities should not surpass the average rates of nearby three-star hotels. Soi, however, believes that once the full implications are considered, stakeholders will see the need for a more nuanced approach. He stated, "Wise minds will think otherwise" when weighing the proposal against the sector's investment needs.

Soi highlighted that the healthcare sector requires substantial capital investment to expand and maintain viability. "We need an environment conducive to investments for hospitals to be built," he noted, underscoring the importance of creating a balanced policy that encourages growth while addressing affordability.

Max Healthcare's Strategic Plans

Despite the proposed price cap, Max Healthcare is not rethinking its expansion strategy. Soi expressed confidence in the company's ability to deliver superior returns, even if the cap is implemented. He suggested that the situation could potentially lead to consolidation opportunities for Max Healthcare.

"We focus on efficiency and providing top-tier healthcare," Soi remarked. He stressed that policies should cater to the average needs rather than outliers, positioning Max Healthcare as a leader in efficient healthcare provision.

Admission Protocols and Insurance Dynamics

Addressing another contentious issue, Soi commented on the General Insurance Council's new guidelines aimed at reducing unnecessary hospital admissions. He clarified that admission decisions are made by doctors, not hospitals, and should remain a discussion between clinicians and insurers.

"Hospitals provide logistics and services, but it's the doctors who decide on patient admissions," Soi explained. He supported the idea of standardizing admission protocols between insurance companies and healthcare providers, provided the Indian Medical Association agrees.

His remarks follow the Association of Healthcare Providers (India)'s response to the guidelines, which urged insurers not to use them as grounds to deny cashless insurance claims. The association, representing over 21,000 hospitals, views the guidelines as advisory rather than mandatory.
