Abhay Soi Challenges Price Caps on Private Hospital Rooms
Max Healthcare's Abhay Soi argues against price caps on hospital rooms, citing investment needs.
During a recent earnings call, Abhay Soi, Chairman of Max Healthcare, cautioned against the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare's recommendation to cap private hospital room charges. He emphasized the potential adverse effects on the expansion and investment in new hospital infrastructure.
Balancing Affordability and Investment
The committee's report suggested that room rates in private hospitals should not exceed those of three-star hotels in nearby areas. Soi argued that such measures might hinder the growth of healthcare facilities by making them financially unviable. "The sector will require a lot more capital, and you have to have an environment that is both viable and conducive to investments for hospitals to be built," Soi stated.
He expressed confidence that the Ministry of Health would consider both affordability and the necessity for new hospital beds in its final decisions. Soi underscored the importance of a balanced approach, suggesting that a blanket cap could deter potential investments required for expanding healthcare infrastructure.
Max Healthcare's Strategic Position
Despite the proposed regulatory changes, Max Healthcare is not altering its expansion plans. Soi highlighted the efficiency of their healthcare services, indicating that any changes might even present opportunities for consolidation. "If there is any viable proposition for setting up hospitals, we believe we will have superior returns relative to that," he remarked.
Hospital Admissions and Insurance Guidelines
Addressing the General Insurance Council's guidelines on hospital admissions, Soi clarified that decisions should primarily lie between doctors and insurers. The guidelines aim to standardize admissions for common illnesses to manage rising insurance claims. Soi remarked, "A hospital does not admit a patient; a doctor admits a patient. This is a matter between insurance companies and clinicians."
The Association of Healthcare Providers (India) has also expressed concerns, viewing the guidelines as advisory rather than mandatory. They warned against insurers using these to deny cashless insurance claims.
