The cap, suggested by a Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare, aims to keep room charges in major cities below the average rates of nearby three-star hotels. Soi argues that such measures must consider the need for additional hospital beds and the viability of investments in the healthcare sector.
Balancing Affordability and Investment
The committee's recommendation, part of a broader report on healthcare affordability and accessibility, has sparked significant debate. Soi emphasized that while affordability is crucial, it should not overshadow the necessity for new hospital infrastructure. Max Healthcare's Expansion Unaffected
Despite the proposed price caps, Soi assured that Max Healthcare's expansion plans remain unchanged. He described the company as an efficient healthcare provider poised to benefit from potential consolidation opportunities if the caps are implemented. Soi highlighted the importance of policies that cater to the average rather than outliers, positioning Max Healthcare as an outlier in terms of efficiency.
Hospital Admissions: A Doctor's Decision
Addressing new clinical guidelines from the General Insurance Council (GIC), Soi clarified that hospital admissions should be determined by doctors and insurers, not hospitals. The guidelines aim to reduce unnecessary hospitalizations and rising insurance claims by advising on admissions for common illnesses. Soi stressed that hospitals merely provide logistics and services, and decisions to admit patients rest with doctors.
The Association of Healthcare Providers (India) has warned against insurers using these guidelines to deny cashless insurance claims, arguing they should serve as recommendations only. Soi's comments underscore the delicate balance between regulatory measures and the operational realities of healthcare providers.
