Nurses’ Strike Disrupts Healthcare in Vidarbha, Maharashtra

Government nurses in Vidarbha—covering Nagpur, Yavatmal, and Akola—have entered an indefinite strike, now on its third day, severely disrupting healthcare delivery. Major hospitals like Government Medical College and Hospital in Nagpur and Mayo Hospital report cancellations and delays in surgeries. In response, authorities have deployed trainee nurses and aides, but services remain strained. The Maharashtra Directorate of Medical Education and Research has warned of employment consequences under service rules. However, nurse unions, led by Manisha Shinde and Sumitra Tote, are demanding pay parity under the 7th Pay Commission, job security, and professional dignity. The ongoing strike underscores long-standing grievances around compensation and respect and signals a critical test for the state’s ability to resolve healthcare workforce disputes.
