In an effort to improve primary healthcare in urban areas, Varanasi has appointed 45 contractual doctors under the National Health Mission. These doctors will focus on underserved wards and slums, targeting maternal and child health, as well as immunization outreach. Appointment letters were handed out in a public ceremony attended by top district officials. The initiative encourages collaboration with ASHA workers and community organizations to enhance healthcare delivery. Special emphasis will be placed on increasing vaccination coverage among pregnant women and children, improving sanitation, and strengthening services at Anganwadi centers. The move is seen as a critical step in bridging gaps in urban health systems and improving outcomes under programs like Janani Suraksha Yojana.
